A scientific study revealed that chronic stress affects women's cognitive functions more than men's as they age.
The study conducted by a research team from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina included nearly 3,900 adults aged fifty and older who do not suffer from dementia. It was found that women who experience chronic stress show a decline in their ability to concentrate and language skills at a faster rate than men.
The researchers noted that the reasons for this decline in cognitive functions have not been determined, nor whether it is related to biological factors such as hormones or social factors such as the roles played by men and women in society.
The study also showed that increased stress among individuals of Latin descent has a greater impact on their memory abilities compared to participants of non-Latin descent.
In the experiment published by the journal Alzheimer and Dementia, which is concerned with Alzheimer's disease and dementia, volunteers reported that they experience stress related to money, health, work, relationships, and caregiving.
Researchers measured the thinking skills of participants in the experiment approximately every two years. On the bright side, researchers found that providing social care helps reduce the impact of stress on certain cognitive functions such as attention span.
Researcher Michelle Milke, a professor of epidemiology and preventive medicine at Wake Forest University, stated in an interview with the medical research website Health Day that "social relationships and stress are parts of social life that may be changeable."
Through the experiment, researchers aim to determine whether reducing stress or enhancing social support for individuals can help maintain cognitive functions as they age.
