Britain Launches Program to Accommodate Palestinian Refugees

London - Afaq News - Shabana Mahmood, the British Home Secretary, announced a comprehensive renewal of the refugee absorption program from conflict areas in the Middle East, with a particular focus on Palestinian refugees.

According to Mahmood, as part of the plan's renewal: "Our government will reopen the immigration pathway in the UK in partnership with the United Nations."

Shabana continued: "We will welcome vulnerable refugees from camps around the world and give them a chance for a better new life here in Britain." According to data she provided herself, a significant portion of the plan will include the absorption of war refugees from Afghanistan and "survivors of the horrors of Gaza."

According to her, the new plan aims to provide "safe and legal" ways to access Britain, as an alternative to the ongoing attempts by thousands of migrants to cross the English Channel by boat, which separates the coasts of England and France, and also to "ensure that Britain meets its international obligations" to absorb refugees fleeing war or persecution.

She confirmed that the plan will be limited and will initially include only hundreds of refugees, although the number is expected to rise to thousands if illegal immigration continues to decline.

According to Mahmoud, a quarter of the refugees who will be accepted under the plan and granted permanent residency in Britain will be Palestinian or Afghan women and girls.

Mahmoud announced the new plan in a speech she also delivered at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, stating that her approach stems from a "desire for justice."

She added that alongside the necessity of imposing immigration restrictions, different communities in the kingdom must be "prepared and ready to welcome newcomers."

She said: "This is what we can do, and this is what we can be, while we regain control of our borders, work to reduce the number of small boat crossings, and enable this country to show its innate generosity."

The Labour Party government takes pride in the recorded decrease this year in the number of migrants who crossed the English Channel and reached the shores of England, although the numbers remain high: more than 18,500 people have crossed so far this year, compared to over 32,000 during the same period in 2025.
