- The American model of Palestinian origin, Bella Hadid, appeared in a couture look from the Italian house “Scaparelli” signed by Daniel Rosebery, on the red carpet to attend the premiere of the new biographical film about Charles de Gaulle, directed by Antonin Boudry, entitled “La Bataille de Gaulle” at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. The design was inspired by the floral crochet dress worn by the late British actress and singer Jane Birkin to the Artists Union Gala in Paris in 1969, which served as the inspiration for the famous Hermès bag.
After appearing at the Italian house “Prada” accompanied by her brother Anwar, and a dress from the archive of the Lebanese designer Elie Saab alongside her mother, Hadid returned in her third appearance on the red carpet, to shine in an ivory-colored dress, completely designed with lace embroidery based on an optical illusion (trompe l’œil) using ropes and anchor threads, which gave the fabric a delicate sculptural dimension. The design featured a deep, bold neckline adorned with a black necklace, a long, multi-layered mermaid-style train, and black velvet ribbons and bow ties at the back.
The dress took 22,160 working hours with the participation of 130 craftsmen, according to the Italian house’s press release. The international model completed the look with geometric diamond earrings and a ring, with her hair pulled back and soft bronze makeup.
In contrast to the perfect and precise coordination that Hadid adopted, Birkin's look was the result of a last-minute improvisational modification, which reflects her spontaneous and liberal style in the world of fashion, as she saw that the neckline of her dress was too high, so she chose to wear her design from the Italian Emilio Pucci in reverse. With this simple change, she transformed an open-back dress into a bold look with a striking, deep cleavage.
Then she fixed the front part, which became the front after modification, with a black brooch studded with jewels, to present a look that combined a rare smoothness between the bohemian spirit and striking boldness at the same time. Unlike Birkin's dress, which ended with a simple floor-length hem, Hadid's dress came with a multi-layered mermaid tail, which flowed behind her with remarkable elegance inside the Festival Palace.
