Trump: Iran's Recent Proposal Regarding the Strait of Hormuz Could Have Been Accepted a Year Ago

- U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he expects talks with Iran to continue this week, after rejecting the latest Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said in an interview with Axios: "I expect more talks with Iran (this week).

They want to make a deal, but it's not the deal I want. It's the deal we might have agreed to a year ago; they have overestimated their position.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met last week with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Biegun on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly; a meeting that Trump described on Tuesday as "very good." After Araghchi stated on Thursday that Iran had presented a proposal to the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume negotiations for a "final agreement," a White House official confirmed on Friday that both sides are having "positive and constructive discussions through intermediaries," Trump rejected the Iranian proposal the following day.

The U.S. President also mentioned to Axios that "more than 20 million barrels" of oil passed through the strait over the weekend. This came after statements made to reporters where he also said that the United States had moved a "record amount of oil through the Strait of Hormuz last night - a quantity that exceeds what we moved before the war."
