Washington - Afaq News - U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the possibility of Iranian attacks on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego would be a "minor cost" compared to what he described as maintaining the security of the United States and the world, during a campaign rally in Nebraska, remarks that sparked widespread criticism within the United States.
Trump's comments came while discussing the economic repercussions of war with Iran, particularly the rise in fuel prices, where he said that this increase represents a limited cost compared to what he considers the objectives of the war.
Trump added: "They can destroy a city, let them destroy Los Angeles, let them destroy San Diego," before asserting that this, in his opinion, is a "very minor cost" compared to maintaining the security of the United States.
The U.S. president stated that the war "will end soon," without providing additional details regarding the expected timeline for its conclusion or the nature of the developments on which he bases this estimate.
Trump's remarks provoked sharp reactions from officials in California, where Governor Gavin Newsom described the president's comments as dangerous, while the mayor of Los Angeles stated that the president's role is to protect the country, not to threaten American cities with attacks.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria rejected the notion that his city is an 'acceptable loss' in the war, stating that San Diego is neither a 'collateral loss' nor a city that can be sacrificed.
The criticism was not limited to Democrats, as Republican congressional candidate Jim Desmond, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, strongly disagreed with Trump's statements, affirming that 'no American city can be considered expendable.'
