A teacher in Tunisia sparked a wave of controversy on social media, after she appeared on a live broadcast via the “Tik Tok” application from inside the classroom during the class session, in an incident that opened a wide discussion regarding the use of school space in creating content and attracting views, and the extent of this impact on the educational process.

In detail, the teacher opened a live broadcast while carrying out her work, and interacted with her followers through the application in front of the students and during the lesson time, which sparked widespread reactions, as users considered that what happened represented a violation of the duties of the profession and the educational responsibility of the teacher.

In this context, activist Adel Bin Mahmoud criticized the teacher’s preoccupation with interacting with her followers in the classroom, calling for preserving the sanctity of the classroom as a space designated for learning, and keeping classroom classes away from the viewing race, stressing that the priority must remain for teaching and following up with students.

For his part, activist Makram Ben Saleh expressed his dissatisfaction with what he considered the transformation of the classroom from an educational space into a “Tik Tok studio,” noting that a teacher who wants to create content can do so outside of working hours, away from the students’ time and their right to learn.

On the other hand, activist Zainab Amari said that she does not oppose the use of phones in the classroom, provided that they are used to serve the lesson and help students obtain additional information and enrich their knowledge, away from personal use or inappropriate use of modern technology.

In turn, Muhammad Ali Boualaki, from the Basic Union for Basic Education, considered that what the teacher did represented a transgression of her professional duties, explaining that the class time was dedicated to teaching and accompanying students, and not to interacting with followers via social media platforms.

Boualaki added to Al-Arabiya.net/Al-Hadath.net that the teacher bears an educational and moral responsibility that requires him to respect learning time and maintain the sanctity of the classroom.

However, he clarified that this position does not mean rejecting the use of modern technology and digital platforms in the classroom, but rather the necessity of employing them in a way that serves the educational process, helps develop teaching methods, simplifies information, and enriches students’ knowledge.

It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Education had issued last February measures prohibiting the use of mobile phones inside educational institutions, in addition to prohibiting photography inside the school space outside the licensed official frameworks, with the aim of protecting students, preserving the sanctity of the institution, and ensuring the normal conduct of lessons.
