The New Zealand police stated in a statement today, Tuesday, that the assistant pilot of Flydubai who stabbed the captain of the plane in what is reported to be an attempt to bring it down last week was in New Zealand to complete part of his flight training for a UK-based company.
The police clarified that the man had been residing in New Zealand from November 2018 to May 2019 on a six-month student visa.
The attack occurred on Wednesday aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was carrying 172 passengers, including 166 Israelis, in addition to the crew, on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The assistant pilot stabbed the Indian captain, who, despite his injury, managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to subdue the attacker.
The plane made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
