EU Countries Approve 5 Major Defense Projects Across the Continent

On Monday, EU member states approved plans for five comprehensive defense projects on the continent covering air, maritime, and aerial defense measures, including drones, to become eligible for funding from the Union.

The Council of the European Union, in a statement announcing the approval of these projects, said that "European defense projects of common interest" allow European countries to cooperate on major defense initiatives that may be too large for a single member state to handle or too complex to develop alone.

The five projects that received funding approval focus on the development of warfare methods using drones and counter-drone technology, as well as protecting the eastern flank of Europe.

The European Commission originally proposed these projects in July and also includes a comprehensive maritime defense project to counter underwater threats, in addition to another for air and missile defense and early warning, and a space defense project.

The European Union, under its "European Defense Industry Program," has allocated a budget estimated at 370 million dollars (325 million euros) for defense projects of mutual benefit, with the possibility of providing additional funding in the future.
