Houthi fighters targeted Aden International Airport in southern Yemen with two ballistic missiles and explosive drones, amid escalating fighting between the Iran-backed rebels and the internationally recognized government forces. The city of Aden is the headquarters of the internationally recognized Yemeni government, and its airport serves as an important transit hub to areas outside Houthi control.
The Aden Security Administration stated in a statement released early Wednesday that "Aden International Airport was targeted at dawn today by two missiles launched by the Houthi rebel group, in an attack that hit a vital civilian facility and endangered the lives of passengers, workers, and flight crews." There were no reports of injuries from the strike, but the Yemeni Ministry of Transport reported that the missiles fell near the airport runway just before the landing of a Yemenia Airlines flight coming from Cairo, forcing the plane to change its course and head to the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
The ministry stated in a statement that "a number of explosive drones" were spotted in the skies over Aden, leading to the evacuation of the airport and the repositioning of aircraft on the ground. The Houthis announced on Sunday that they had taken control of a vital highway linking the southern Taiz region to the city of Aden.
The Houthi-run Ministry of Health stated on Tuesday that at least 83 civilians have been killed and 146 others injured since the start of the attack. The ministry's spokesperson, Anas Al-Asbahi, mentioned that "children make up 60% of the dead and injured."
The Afaq News network was unable to independently verify these figures.
