The father of the 13-month-old Moroccan twins, Saja and Wadha, could not hold back his tears after seeing his two daughters for the first time, each of them in a separate bed, following the success of their separation in the Kingdom. For his part, the father of the twins confirmed to Al Arabiya that the efforts made in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were exceptional, saying: “I saw my children for the first time in two separate beds, and it was a moment that cannot be described in words.”
In addition, he added that he contacted the center, where those in charge of it welcomed him and informed him of the possibility of his coming to the Kingdom.
He described the day of his arrival in Riyadh as one of the happiest days of his life, saying: “It was a happy day for me, the day I came to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and saw my children.” He continued: “No matter what I say or express, I will not be able to fulfill their rights, because what they gave is greater than words can express.”
Saja and Wadha arrived in the Kingdom on April 24, before undergoing careful medical examinations that revealed their adhesion in the chest and abdomen areas, with their involvement in the membranes of the heart, liver, and intestines. The examinations also showed that there was a problem in the larynx in one of the two girls, which required endoscopic treatment before the separation operation was performed, while the success rate of the operation before it was performed was estimated at about 70%.
The medical and surgical team of the Saudi Program for Conjoined Twins, led by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabiah, succeeded in separating the twins through surgical and medical interventions carried out in 6 stages and lasting about 6 hours, with the participation of 23 consultants, specialists, and nursing and technical staff, inside the King Abdullah Specialist Hospital for Children in King Abdulaziz Medical City.
With the success of the “Saja and Duha” operation, the number of separation operations conducted by the Saudi Program for Conjoined Twins increased to 73 operations, while it provided care for about 159 twins from 28 countries on five continents since its launch.
The establishment of the program dates back to 1990, with the aim of receiving cases of conjoined twins from various countries of the world and providing them with specialized medical care.
Over the course of more than 36 years, the program has developed into one of the most prominent Saudi medical and humanitarian experiments in this field, based on accumulated experience in dealing with cases varying in degree of adhesion, shared organs, and accompanying medical complications.
