Questions are renewed in Israel regarding what preceded the events of October 7, 2023, this time from within the inner circle of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with accusations related to the accuracy of official records documenting meetings and calls in the first days of the war.
Avi Gil, Netanyahu's former military secretary, accused the latter's office of possible tampering with minutes of meetings and calls during the first days of the Gaza war, warning that the official account of what preceded the attack on October 7, 2023, does not reflect the truth of what happened.
Gil, who held the position at the time of the events, said that the 55-page report that Netanyahu submitted to the state comptroller does not present the full picture, calling on any future investigation committee to obtain the original recordings instead of being limited to written records. This came during Gil’s interview with the “Israel Hayom” newspaper.
He also explained that, about two weeks after the outbreak of the war, he began to notice an unusual collection of documents by people in Netanyahu’s close circle. He said that he contacted the government's legal advisor to request clarification of the rules governing the documentation of meetings and calls, stressing that he was not seeking to hold a specific person responsible, but rather to know what is permitted and what is legally prohibited.
He pointed out that after his move, the Israeli police began investigating suspicions related to an attempt by senior officials in the Prime Minister’s Office to change the minutes of government meetings and call recordings of officials, including Netanyahu, during the first days of the war. The investigation included Prime Minister Tzachi Braverman's chief of staff.
In addition, Gill described what was suspected of happening as a “pattern of criminal behavior,” saying that some officials acted as if they could do whatever they wanted.
He also warned of the possibility that the records of that period had been modified to serve the narrative that presented Netanyahu as the only official who dealt efficiently with the beginning of the events, but stressed the need to examine the original recordings to verify what happened.
On the other hand, the Likud Party described the interview as “fabricated political propaganda” aimed at bringing down Netanyahu and ruling the right.
Meanwhile, Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana accused former military leaders of seeking to overthrow the Prime Minister. As for Gadi Eisenkot, who is considered one of Netanyahu’s most prominent potential rivals in the upcoming elections, he said that the prime minister misled the public and betrayed the trust of the Israelis, according to what Haaretz reported.
