On Thursday, former Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, commented on Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s announcement that Egypt’s constitution “will not be touched by anyone,” adding that this is a “historic achievement” that is credited to everyone who contributes to its achievement. Amr Moussa previously wrote in a post on his official account on the “X” platform, Twitter: “I followed with great happiness and great interest what President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi announced during the armed forces’ educational symposium, a categorical assertion that Egypt’s constitution will not be ‘touched by anyone’.”
Amr Moussa added: “This confirmation represents a decisive position and sends a political message with deep meaning, and constitutes a strong building block in the process of rebuilding Egypt.” The former Secretary-General of the Arab League went on to say: “The constitution is the contract that regulates the relationship between the state and its citizens, defines the rules for the exercise and transfer of power, and protects rights and freedoms.
Its respect and stability are the basis of the legitimacy of governance and the stability of the state and society.” He added: “President Sisi’s position opens an important stage in the development of Egyptian political life.
The Egyptian political community must understand and appreciate that the president’s statement means that a new phase has begun that requires seriousness in political practice. Respect for the constitution and the rule of law is a fine culture, which Egyptian political society must rise to.
The Egyptian Parliament must now formulate laws complementary to the Constitution that its texts called for.” Amr Moussa concluded by saying: “The new republic requires a lively political life and well-established institutions, and I look forward to this presidential position being translated into political and constitutional practice that enhances confidence in the future, and establishes the principle that respecting the Constitution is not just a legal obligation, but a fundamental national responsibility.”
This is a historic achievement that is credited to everyone who contributes to its achievement. Al-Sisi said on Wednesday that the country’s constitution “will not be touched by anyone,” in an apparent reference to what was raised about the possibility of it being subject to amendment for the purpose of extending terms of rule.
The Egyptian President explained, during an educational seminar for the armed forces, that “the state has a constitution, a constitution that we approved for the state, stating that no one will touch it and reiterating that no one will touch it, thus stressing that no one should tamper with the minds of Egyptians.” Under the 2019 constitutional amendments, the duration of the presidential term is 6 years, and the presidency may not extend for more than two consecutive terms.
