A camera captures two whales swimming in harmony with a pod of dolphins in Brazil

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - In an amazing scene, a video clip shows two humpback whales swimming in harmony and fluidity behind a group of dolphins in the middle of the ocean, in an amazing contrast between their huge size and their agility, which matches the speed of dolphins many times smaller than them. Brazilian nature and marine life photographer, Rafael Mesquita, explained that he was able to document this scene (watch the video above) of two humpback whales and a number of bottlenose dolphins together off the coast of Iliabila in Brazil.

Mesquita recalls in an interview with the Ofoq News website in Arabic, that on the day he documented this scene, the annual migration of humpback whales was at its peak, a migration that departs from feeding areas in the south to the warm waters on the Brazilian coast, specifically to the south of the state of Bahia in northeastern Brazil, where they breed. During this trip, some whales swim within the area covered by his research projects, i.e. the coast of the state of São Paulo in Brazil.

“On that day, the sea and weather conditions were perfect, so I decided to undertake a research expedition, as I usually do at this time of year, sailing approximately 15 nautical miles,” Mesquita said. Then, Mesquita launched his drone to count the whales and understand their behavior.

Mesquita noticed bottlenose dolphins, some of which approached his boat spontaneously as they normally do, but it was only through the screen of the drone's controller that he realized they were actually interacting with the whales. The dolphins appeared to be actively pursuing the whales and continued to accompany them, which Mesquita found was similar to their usual behavior in following boats.

Mesquita stressed that one of his goals in documenting these scenes is to bring people closer to nature, explaining: “We are losing our connection to the natural world, and there is no doubt that this is one of the reasons why we do not pay enough attention to the climate change that we are facing.”
