On Thursday, the US Secret Service arrested a man near the White House. He was found in possession of a number of firearms inside a stolen car, and he was threatening to kill President Donald Trump. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Secret Service agents observed an individual named Ronnie Jordrix Guaniba Chirinos - a Venezuelan citizen who had entered the United States illegally - "acting suspiciously inside a vehicle parked next to the White House."
The ministry said in a statement: “When the officers confronted the suspect, he claimed to hear voices in his head telling him to come to Washington, D.C., and kill President Trump.” The statement added: “The officers later discovered that the car had been reported stolen, and the suspect also admitted that there were weapons inside it.”
The Ministry reported that officers found a rifle and two pistols inside the car, in addition to dozens of bullets. Chirinos was arrested on multiple charges of "firearms, as well as unauthorized use of a vehicle and possession of stolen property," and is currently in custody.
The Department of Homeland Security said Chirinos entered the United States illegally in 2024. “This is the latest example of Secret Service personnel drawing on their extensive training and experience to contain a tense situation that posed an imminent threat to the people we protect and other American citizens,” Secret Service Director Sean Curran said.
He added: "This incident reflects the nature of the increasing threats under which we operate, as well as the continued influx of armed individuals drawn to the White House complex." According to the Secret Service, the White House area has seen a significant increase in incidents involving people with mental health problems. Officials believe that the White House and the presidency may represent a symbolic attraction for people suffering from such disorders.
In May, Secret Service agents fatally shot a man - who previously suffered from mental health problems - after he opened fire near a White House security checkpoint.
