Tel Aviv - Ofoq News - Former Shin Bet security chief Ronen Bar revealed that Israeli government officials, about two months before the October 7, 2023 attack, raised the idea of allowing Hamas to control the West Bank, according to what was stated in a lawsuit he filed against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The lawsuit includes compensation amounting to three million shekels. This lawsuit came after a tweet published by Netanyahu, in which he accused Barr of “negligence and crimes” that led to the October 7 attack.
According to the newspaper “Israel Hayom”, Bar said in the lawsuit that the idea was raised during a meeting of the Israeli Security Ministerial Council on July 9, 2023, indicating that he rejected it categorically, warning that Hamas is a fundamentalist religious movement that has made the elimination of Israel and the killing of Israelis its goal.
The lawsuit did not specify the names of the officials who proposed the idea during the meeting.
According to the newspaper, the lawsuit includes a set of facts that Barr said were supported by documents and testimonies, and contradicts Netanyahu’s account that he did not receive repeated warnings before the October 7 attack, and that important information was withheld from him.
Bar accused the Prime Minister of trying to turn the discussion about the failures that preceded the attack into accusations against the leaders of the security services, with the aim of diverting attention from his political responsibility and trying to hold the former Shin Bet chief responsible primarily.
Barr stressed that his lawsuit does not aim to evade his responsibility for the failures, which he said he had previously endured, but rather to confront what he described as defamation of him by Netanyahu and an attempt to hold him responsible for the prime minister himself.
In the lawsuit, Barr reveals that he proposed liquidating Sinwar, but Netanyahu opposed this step for fear that he would be liquidated again.
He added: “After the “Shield and Arrow” operation against the Islamic Jihad movement in May 2023, I proposed expanding the scope of the use of targeted assassinations in various fields, and provided intelligence information about Sinwar. Netanyahu responded that he feared “balancing the assassinations equation” by encouraging enemies to carry out similar actions against him personally.”
