Barcelona fined a small fine for trying to sign Julian Alvarez

The Spanish League (La Liga) imposed a fine on Barcelona due to a complaint filed by Atletico Madrid against the Catalan team after it communicated with Julián Alvarez despite his commitment to a contract with the Rojiblancos. Atletico accused Barcelona of opening negotiations with the Argentine striker, who has a contract with the former until the summer of 2030, last summer without notifying him in advance in writing.

The Rojiblancos also filed a complaint with the International Federation (FIFA), but the latter revealed that it did not have the authority to look into the case. According to what was reported by the TNT SPORTS network on Wednesday, LaLiga fined the Catalan team 602 euros (about 672 dollars).

Alvarez had expressed his apologies to the Atletico Madrid fans after he announced his desire to leave and move to Barcelona, on the sidelines of his participation with his country’s national team in the 2026 World Cup. His controversial statements at the time caused him to be excluded from the Atletico Madrid squad for some matches, and he was met with boos and criticism from the club’s supporters.

Julián Alvarez said, after scoring a goal and leading his club to victory over Deportivo La Coruna, last Saturday: “I would like to apologize to our fans for what I said at the World Cup. It was a mistake in terms of the way I said it and its timing.” He added: "I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I would be angry too, especially considering the support they have given me since my arrival."

The 26-year-old continued: “I hope I can change this situation with hard work and humility.” He added: "I feel better in the last matches, both physically and in terms of controlling the ball. I want to help the team and do my best."
