British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Monday that there was a "high possibility" that the suspected plot targeting Fairford Air Force Base was coordinated in Iran, and that the Revolutionary Guard was likely the one who directed it. He added before Parliament, "We will not tolerate these threats on our soil. We will firmly confront Iran's use of criminal networks, and we will use all our powers to target these networks and their sources of funding, and we will also impose further sanctions to limit the ability of Iran and the Revolutionary Guard to harm us."
While British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband condemned Iran's continued attempts to undermine the security of the United Kingdom and its international partners through its criminal networks and proxy groups, describing them as unacceptable.
Miliband stressed that London has repeatedly made clear to Iran that Britain will not tolerate any threats on its territory.
He said that today he directed the summoning of the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Kingdom to reiterate this message very clearly.
He added: “Today we announce the inclusion of the names of two Iranian citizens on the sanctions list for their role in facilitating or participating in hostile activities on behalf of the Iranian regime... This government will never waver in its commitment to confront Iran’s unacceptable actions and protect our national security.”
He pointed out that Britain included the “Islamic Revolutionary Guard” on the sanctions list under new powers related to confronting threats from countries.
The British Foreign Office also issued a joint statement signed by more than 25 countries, including America, supporting Britain's accusation that Iran was involved in the Fairford Air Base incident.
Britain had announced earlier today the inclusion of two new items on the sanctions list related to Iran.
They are Ruhollah Bazghandi, a commander in the army of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Shahram Alireza Tamerzadeh Zawiya Jaki, who works as a prominent member of a criminal network that carries out operations for the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security.
