Decisive Runoff: "Lula" Faces Extremist "Bolsonaro" in Battle for Brazil's Future

Brazil - Afaq News - Brazil is heading towards a decisive presidential runoff on October 25 after current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro failed to secure a majority in the first round.

The Supreme Electoral Court in Brasília announced that neither candidate received 50 percent or more of the votes needed to win outright. According to the announced results, Bolsonaro received just over 55.8 million votes, compared to about 53.2 million votes for Lula.

Lula is 80 years old and is seeking a non-consecutive fourth presidential term, while Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is 45 years old and aims to bring his father's right-wing movement back to power.

Flávio Bolsonaro, who led the first round of the Brazilian presidential elections, has a clearly pro-Israel stance and promises to change relations between the two countries. If elected, he intends to reappoint an ambassador to Israel, move the Brazilian embassy to Jerusalem, and visit the country at the beginning of his term. He previously stated: "If Israel lays down its arms, it will cease to exist."

Since neither candidate surpassed the 50% threshold, they will compete again in the second round on October 25, and the presidency will be decided in a second election between candidates with opposing orientations in the largest economy in Latin America, which has about 214 million inhabitants. The new presidential term begins on January 5, 2027.

In the second round, the two candidates are now competing to win millions of additional votes. The votes that will narrow the slight gap represent about 8% of the voters who supported other candidates, who received only a small percentage of the votes. The New York Times noted that analysts expect most of these voters, who largely supported candidates from other right-wing parties, to shift their support to Bolsonaro.

Thirteen candidates are competing in the elections, but two main candidates have emerged during the campaign. Lula, 80 years old, the leader of the Brazilian left, is seeking a fourth presidential term. He is challenged by Bolsonaro, 45 years old, who is seeking to bring the far-right back to power, led by his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro.

The results of the Brazilian elections may have implications that extend beyond the country's borders. A victory for Bolsonaro could strengthen a series of achievements by right-wing candidates in Latin America allied with former U.S. President Donald Trump, while a second term for Lula could strain relations between Brazil and Washington, following disagreements between the two administrations over trade and security issues.
