- Kampong Air, located in Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, dates back more than 600 years, and is a historic settlement built entirely on wooden stilts. Ofoq News explores the nature of life for thousands of people who live above the surface of the water.
Getting around Kampong Ayer, the world's largest water village built entirely on stilts, is a little different, with residents using boats to get around and boardwalks to walk. Each of the 42 villages that make up this area is famous for its own handicraft.
“We have one of the villages known for silversmithing,” says Haji Abu Zar, co-founder of Tiratak Setiawan Guest House. “Some are known for making boats, others are known for weaving traditional textiles.”
While many residents have moved inland over the years, Kampong Ayer remains a symbol of national pride. Downriver, Abu Zar runs a guesthouse dedicated to preserving the heritage of this region, with the help of his mother, who was born in the water village.
“I feel very proud to be one of the people living in Kampong Ayer, because the relationships here are very close,” says Hajja Fatima, co-founder of Teratak Setiawan Guest House. “I want my children, grandchildren and nieces to always remember Kampong Ayer.”
Through food and homely touches, they keep local traditions alive for generations to come. “One of the reasons we started was because we wanted to share our culture and heritage,” says Abu Zar.
“When guests come here, they will see remnants of history, they will see families that still live here, and a culture and heritage that people still live today.”
