"Fire Dance".. Photographer Documents Dynamic Scenes of This Tradition in Saudi Arabia

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Amidst the enthusiastic atmosphere, accompanied by chants and poetry, a performer resembling an acrobat moves dynamically among sparks of fire. Upon seeing a glimpse of the sparks from afar, and hearing the synchronized showcase of steps, it may suggest to some that they are about to witness an intense battle.

However, the scene is part of an authentic Saudi heritage known as 'Tashir', an ancient war dance that was famous in the past, according to the official website of the Saudi Press Agency 'SPA'. 'The Fire Dance' may surprise you when you watch this dance for the first time, as Saudi photographer Abdulrahman Al-Dughailbi said in an interview with Afaq News in Arabic that 'those who see it for the first time do not realize the power of the sound coming from the gun (the suppressor), which may cause fear for some.' Al-Dughailbi, who is also a tour guide, has documented this traditional dance for nearly a decade in the Al-Shafa and Al-Hada regions of Taif.

He was encouraged by the challenge among some photographers to document the spark that comes from the gun during the performance of the dance, and to 'freeze the moment', as he expressed. The photographer noted that this art is also called 'The Fire Dance' due to the fire that comes from the gun.

The sparks of fire appear brightly in the enchanting scenes captured by the photographer, stating that he had to photograph them from a distance due to the danger of the flames. The ancient warriors practiced Tashir as a way to instill confidence and enthusiasm before going into battle, and to express joy after victory.

This dance involves performing arranged and synchronized steps, jumping gracefully, while the performer playfully handles his gun loaded with gunpowder, turning it into flames beneath his feet after pulling the trigger, according to what was mentioned by the SPA. The gunpowder used in the art of Tashir comes from non-live ammunition made from the trees of 'Ushar', 'Arak', and salt.

Today, this folk art is showcased at celebrations and events to spread joy and happiness in people's hearts. This dance may tempt viewers to try it, but Al-Dughailbi pointed out that it requires high fitness, in addition to having strong arms.
