On Wednesday, France summoned the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to protest against the "disinformation campaign being waged by Iranian authorities regarding the high school student movement in France," according to the spokesperson for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Spokesperson Pascal Confavreux stated, "The ambassador was informed that the false materials published by official accounts of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs online are completely unacceptable, and that the summoning of our ambassador in Tehran on October 6 has no basis."
He added, "These disgraceful provocations must stop."
Tehran had stated that it summoned the French ambassador to Iran, Pierre Cochard, on Tuesday to protest the treatment of demonstrators by French authorities.
Iran accused France of "violent treatment" of demonstrators and committing "widespread and blatant human rights violations" during the protests that began at the end of last month and were marked by unrest.
The relations between France and Iran have been tense for months, as both countries expelled diplomats from each other in August.
Iran also witnessed widespread protests against the government in January. The authorities stated that more than 3,000 people were killed during these "terrorist acts" orchestrated by the United States and Israel.
