Paris - Ofoq News - The French authorities announced the first human infection with the Chamonda virus in history, and the patient’s death as a result.
The French authorities' statement said: "The patient, who suffered from severe immunodeficiency, and who was receiving treatment at Lyon Hospital for a serious illness, was infected with the Chamonda virus. He died in early October. Clinical, biological and epidemiological studies are still ongoing."
The French Ministry of Agriculture indicates that there is currently no scientific evidence confirming the transmission of the virus through the consumption of meat, milk, or their manufactured products. Therefore, consumption of infected animal products is prohibited
The ministry added: “Given the information currently available about the virus, no risks to public health have been identified at the present time.”
Chamunda is a contagious pathogenic virus that infects animals and belongs to the genus Orthoponiavirus. It is transmitted through the bites of blood-sucking colicoid flies. It mainly infects livestock. It was discovered in Nigeria in the 1960s.
It was believed that this virus was not transmitted to humans, and for this reason this incident is the first documented case in history of its detection in humans.
