17 people, including children and students, were subjected to successive incidents of being bitten by a stray dog in the 10th of Ramadan city in the Egyptian Sharkia Governorate, during the past two days, which raised a state of anxiety among the people, amid movements by the concerned authorities to find the dog and take the necessary measures to prevent a recurrence of the incident.
The Tenth of Ramadan Hospital received a number of injured people, where they underwent the necessary medical examinations and received therapeutic care, in addition to the antiserum, in accordance with established medical procedures.
Some cases that required additional medical follow-up were directed to the Fever Hospital in Zagazig, to complete the necessary care and follow up on their health condition.
According to preliminary information and accounts from residents and eyewitnesses, the attacks occurred at the hands of a single dog that wandered between a number of residential properties and bit residents and passers-by.
Eyewitnesses gave descriptions of the dog to the concerned authorities, who began searching for it in preparation for dealing with the incident and reducing the possibility of other citizens being injured.
In the same context, the Directorate of Veterinary Medicine in the Eastern Province decided to form a committee to move to the sites that witnessed the biting incidents, conduct a field examination of the area and inventory the dogs there, in preparation for determining appropriate veterinary and preventive measures.
The incident reopens the file of the spread of stray dogs and biting incidents in Egypt, in light of repeated demands to strengthen prevention measures and protect citizens, in parallel with dealing with stray animals in accordance with approved veterinary controls.
Health data previously announced the recording of large numbers of cases of biting across the country, including biting by dogs and cats, which highlights the importance of prompt medical treatment of infected people, and assessing the need for vaccinations and serums according to the condition of each case.
At the legislative level, the issue of regulating the possession of animals and dogs witnessed parliamentary attention, with the approval of the law regulating the possession of dangerous animals and dogs, which includes controls related to the possession and handling of dogs, with the aim of reducing the risks associated with them.
The government also announced moves to deal with the phenomenon of stray animals, including procedures for vaccination and sterilization, and plans to provide places to shelter them in coordination with the concerned authorities and civil society institutions.
The 10th of Ramadan incident once again highlights the importance of quickly responding to Aqr accidents, providing medical care to the injured, and strengthening prevention measures in residential areas to prevent the recurrence of such accidents.
