How did the world's highest bridge become a popular tourist destination in China?

In the midst of the towering mountains in southwest China, a crowd of tourists gathered to watch a young man preparing to bungee jump from the highest bridge in the world. The young man stood above a deep valley, about nine times above the water of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, while the majestic peaks of Guizhou Province stretched behind him.

After checking the safety equipment and fixing the ropes, the young man jumped into the air, falling towards the valley for seven seconds before the elastic rope brought him back to the top, amid the applause of the spectators. The scene was not just an exceptional adventure, but rather evidence of the transformation of one of the most prominent Chinese engineering achievements into a tourist destination that attracts lovers of excitement and nature.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge was opened in September 2025, and rises 625 meters above the Beiban River in southwestern China, holding the title of the highest bridge in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The bridge extends for approximately 2.9 km, and was designed to reduce the valley crossing time from two hours to just two minutes, and to connect remote mountain communities to the national road network.

But the bridge went beyond its traditional function, as it received about 3.3 million visitors from its opening until August 2026, according to data provided by local officials to Ofoq News. Tourists can now enter parts of the bridge structure, stand on glass observation platforms that reveal the depths of the valley, or try bungee jumping and walking on elevated paths under the road, using safety equipment.

These experiences provide exceptional views of the surrounding mountains, and demonstrate the enormous scale of the engineering project. The effects of the bridge were not limited to tourism and adventures, but also extended to the economy of the neighboring villages.

After years of working as a chef in various Chinese provinces, Lin Guoquan returned to his hometown of Guizhou, and began converting old houses, including his grandparents' house, into accommodation for tourists, betting on the influx of visitors. “When we started, we only had nine rooms,” Lin says, “but today we have expanded to 52 rooms, and yet we cannot accommodate all the guests.”

During the Chinese New Year holiday in February 2026, which lasted nine days, the bridge service area recorded more than 300,000 visits. Lin has also become a well-known figure on the “Duyin” platform, the Chinese version of “Tik Tok”, where more than 100,000 people follow him, and he displays via live broadcast the beauty of his village and the bridge extending over it.

He confirms that many tourists book their rooms after watching the videos he posts, and ask him for advice on organizing their trips. With the growing number of visitors, there was a need to improve communications networks, after coverage was limited in the region.

The government company China Mobile, in cooperation with Huawei, worked to expand the scope of the network and add new communication stations. Zhou Jianguo, an official in the strategy and business development department at Huawei, said that the huge physical bridge needs a parallel digital bridge, which is the communications network.

New shops and cafes have appeared in Huajiang Town, along with luxury hotel projects. The most prominent of which is the Onaemont Hotel, which includes 83 rooms, restaurants and a swimming pool with a panoramic view, and all of its rooms overlook the bridge directly.

Cao Luyao, director of marketing communications at the hotel, says that the most important shift is to encourage tourists to stay overnight instead of just a short visit, which will boost local spending. Despite these successes, the expansion of the construction of giant bridges raises questions about their economic viability.

Li Lina, an assistant professor at Beijing Normal University, studied 295 high bridges in Guizhou and found that their contribution to improving mobility at the administrative district level was gradually declining. The average improvement reached about 8% between 2010 and 2015, before decreasing to about 5% between 2015 and 2020, as a result of the expansion of highway networks.

However, the researcher confirms that building bridges in isolated mountainous areas may bring great economic and social benefits, noting the need to identify the problems that each new project will address. The question remains whether the millions who visited the Huajiang Bridge will ensure long-term prosperity for local communities.

The bridge, which was originally built to transport people to other destinations, has today become a destination in itself that tourists go to, whether for adventure, taking photos, or even holding wedding parties.
