Rasd Organization for Rights and Liberties confirmed that the continued siege and restrictions imposed on the movement of civilians in the city of Taiz, and the resulting obstruction of access to food, medicine, education and health care, constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law and human rights law, and acts related to the siege, depending on their circumstances and available evidence, may amount to war crimes.
The organization condemned the continued siege imposed on the city of Taiz by the Houthi militias, which exacerbates the suffering of more than two and a half million people, including about 140,000 displaced people, many of whom live in areas close to the confrontation lines, amid risks that threaten their lives and livelihoods.
The organization called on the UN envoy to Yemen, the United Nations, and international and humanitarian organizations to take urgent action and put pressure to lift the siege on Taiz, open roads for civilians, ensure unimpeded access to humanitarian aid, and ensure the population’s access to food, water, medicine, education, and health care, while providing special protection for the displaced and the most vulnerable groups.
The organization stressed that protecting civilians is a legal and humanitarian responsibility, and that their continued suffering without effective international action undermines the principles of international law and multiplies the humanitarian catastrophe.
