Polish officials said, on Saturday, that at least 6 people were killed and 16 others were injured, after a gunman opened fire from his car in the city of Krakow in southern Poland, adding that 3 other bodies were found in his home. Krakow police reported that they received reports of a shooting incident at approximately three o'clock in the afternoon local time, as the suspect entered the city's main square in his car and began shooting randomly, killing four women and two men.
Deputy Police Inspector Katarzyna Sislaw told Polish channel TVN24 that the alleged attacker was wearing military-style clothing and used “military weapons.” The police said that the attacker - a 25-year-old Polish citizen - was shot by police before being taken to the hospital, noting that he was the only perpetrator pursued by the authorities. He had undergone several surgeries, and is now in a "stable but extremely dangerous condition," a regional police spokesman told Reuters news agency.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kuciniak-Kamisz denied reports that the suspect was a soldier, saying: “This man was not - and is not - a soldier in the Polish Armed Forces, and he had no connection to the army at all.” Later, police found the bodies of three people - two women and a man - during a search of the suspect's home in the city of Ostrowiec Święciskie, an area located about 120 miles north of Krakow.
Sisulu stated that they also found “numerous pieces of weapons and ammunition” inside his vehicle. It was not immediately clear what was the motive behind the shootings carried out by the gunman.
The Associated Press reported that Interior Minister Marcin Cervinski said in a press conference that the attacker was fascinated by far-right ideologies and held "very extremist views." Kervinsky stated that two policemen were among those injured in the attack, one of them in a very critical condition. According to officials, one of the policemen was hit by a single gunshot, while the other received three bullets.
A regional police spokesman told Reuters that both policemen underwent surgery, and their condition is now stable. Reuters video footage showed the presence of heavily armed police officers, wearing helmets and tactical equipment, in the square.
The footage also shows passers-by walking in the street, while sirens are heard in the background. Krakow's main square, lined with cafes and bars, is usually a bustling area and very popular with tourists and locals alike.
Emergency teams are still working at the accident site. The Polish police allocated a bus near the site of the attack so that eyewitnesses could give their statements to the authorities.
The Krakow Transport Authority reported that a bullet fired by the attacker hit a tram car, shattering the driver's cabin window, but no casualties were reported. The animal rights organization OTOZ Animals reported that the suspect also shot two horses that were pulling carts in the city center.
The organization explained that the two horses are still alive, received treatment by a veterinarian, and were then transported away from the site. Poland, like other European Union countries, imposes strict rules on the possession of firearms. Only a very small number of people are allowed to own military-style weapons or carry weapons in public.
