South Korea's spy agency on Sunday denied a news report that the United States had restricted intelligence sharing with Seoul regarding North Korea's missile-related information.
South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that the NIA's denial comes in light of concerns about an apparent rift in bilateral intelligence cooperation following the revelation of a North Korean uranium enrichment facility.
Last March, during a parliamentary session, Unification Minister Chung Dong-yong referred to the Goseong region in North Korea as one of the sites that includes a uranium enrichment facility, and this revelation is said to have prompted Washington to restrict Seoul’s access to some intelligence information related to North Korea.
The intelligence agency admitted last Thursday that it was excluded from a tripartite meeting with Washington and Tokyo regarding North Korean cyber threats last June.
“We reiterate that, with the exception of certain information limitations that our government has already acknowledged, South Korea and the United States are actively cooperating in a range of areas, including North Korean missile and conventional military capabilities, developments in North Korea, as well as international relations, cybersecurity, and counterintelligence,” the National Intelligence Agency said in a statement.
