The Transport Workers Union announces protest steps and warns of a comprehensive strike next Wednesday

Ramallah - Ofoq News - The General Union of Transport Workers in Palestine announced, today, Saturday, protest steps to demand that the government respond to the demands of workers in the sector, most notably subsidizing fuel, especially diesel, in light of the continuing rise in prices and the increasing financial burdens on drivers.

The union said, in a statement following an emergency meeting it held with the participation of its branches in various governorates, that it decided to carry out one-hour protests next Monday, from ten to eleven in the morning, inside transportation complexes in various governorates, to demand the government’s response to the sector’s demands.

She added that next Tuesday, she will issue a union statement that includes announcing a comprehensive strike on Wednesday, if the government continues to ignore the demands of the transportation sector and does not take practical measures to alleviate the accumulated burdens on its workers.

The union confirmed that the continuous rise in fuel prices, especially diesel, has exacerbated the financial burden on workers in the transportation sector, and placed it facing unprecedented challenges, with which continuing to work has become a burden beyond the ability of drivers to bear, and threatens the livelihoods of thousands of workers and their families.

She indicated that she had contacted the government and asked it to assume its responsibilities towards the transportation sector, which constitutes an essential lifeline in serving citizens and supporting economic movement, but so far it has not seen a real and serious response that meets the demands of the sector and alleviates the increasing burdens on its workers.

The union sent a message to the Palestinian people, in which it stressed that the transportation sector and its drivers continued to serve the citizens despite the difficult economic conditions and the continuing rise in operating costs, and they shouldered their national and social responsibilities out of concern for the interests and steadfastness of the Palestinian people.

She stressed that the demands of workers in the sector are not privileges, but rather fair rights aimed at protecting the transport sector, preserving the dignity of its workers, and ensuring the continuity of providing services to citizens.

She stressed that the ball is now in the government's court, calling for urgent and responsible decisions to be taken before reaching a stage where the sector cannot continue working.

The union concluded its statement by saluting drivers and workers in the transportation sector, in appreciation of their patience, steadfastness, and assuming national responsibility in light of the difficult circumstances that the Palestinian people are going through.
