US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he has no plans to attack Iran before the midterm congressional elections. Trump said in a post on his “Truth Social” platform: “We will not attack Iran at any time before the midterm elections scheduled to be held in the United States on November 3,” and added that the administration is holding “fruitful discussions” with Tehran, and that his main goal is to ensure that the country does not obtain a nuclear weapon.
The president's statements come in the wake of multiple media reports detailing the US administration's planning to launch possible new strikes before the elections, which are only 26 days away. Trump confirmed that he intends to continue economic pressure on Iran, and said that the blockade imposed on Iranian ports "will remain in full force."
The administration has favored economic sanctions over military strikes for months, although it appears to have done little to urge Iranian officials to negotiate. American officials told the Ofek News network earlier that there is a broad consensus within the administration to postpone any additional military action until after the midterm elections, which Trump has indicated publicly on several occasions.
