Tel Aviv - Ofoq News - Israeli writer Ben Caspit revealed that the United States called on Israel, during talks that took place between the two sides in the last two weeks regarding Iran, to launch a unilateral attack on it, instead of Washington carrying out the attack itself or for the two parties to launch it jointly, pointing out that Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir opposed this approach, and that the Americans have withdrawn from their demand at the present time.
Caspit wrote in the Maariv newspaper on Saturday that Zamir explained to the Americans, according to what was published by journalist Barak Ravid, that an Israeli attack of this kind would likely lead to the postponement of the elections in Israel.
He pointed out that the American demand came against the backdrop of developments in Iran, related to Tehran restoring its capabilities to produce drones and ballistic missiles at a rapid pace, despite months of American and Israeli strikes.
According to Caspit, Washington wanted Israel to bear the political risks resulting from launching the attack, instead of US President Donald Trump, ahead of the midterm elections in the United States. The Americans believed that Israel might be interested in launching an attack before its elections, while launching an American attack before the elections might harm Trump politically.
The writer added that previous reports talked about Trump considering resuming attacks on Iran, but what has now been revealed, according to his account, is that the initial idea included asking Israel to take military action before the elections, before this step stopped for the time being.
Caspit pointed out that the position of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on this issue is not entirely clear, noting that his agenda during the past week was described as “extremely security-related,” and that he made a series of sensitive contacts and visits.
Iran is rebuilding its missile capabilities
In this context, reports published by Bloomberg on Saturday, citing officials familiar with the details, stated that Iran was able to maintain missile and drone production facilities despite months of American and Israeli bombing, which allows Tehran to rebuild its arsenal, at a time when Trump avoids launching additional attacks ahead of the American midterm elections.
According to Western officials, Iran still has the ability to produce weapons with which to rebuild its stockpiles. One source indicated that Tehran still possesses large quantities of ballistic missiles and anti-ship weapons, and can quickly increase its stock.
Russia has also been reported to be supplying missiles to Iran, consistent with previous intelligence estimates issued in June.
Bloomberg reported that these estimates of Iranian capabilities clearly contradict repeated statements by Trump and his team, in which they said that eight months of air strikes had destroyed Iran's ability to threaten US bases and US allies in the region.
Earlier this year, Trump said that the Iranian army was “completely destroyed,” while US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the United States had eliminated the Islamic Republic’s “military industrial capacity.”
