MOSCOW, Russia - Nord Stream AG, operator of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline from Russia to Germany, said the pipeline system under the Baltic Sea suffered "unprecedented" damage in a single day, according to Reuters. Reuters quoted the company as saying, “The destruction that occurred simultaneously on the same day on three strings of offshore gas pipelines of the Nord Stream system is unprecedented.”
It is not yet possible to estimate the timing of the restoration of gas transportation infrastructure.” In September, Russia suspended gas shipments to Europe via Nord Stream 1 indefinitely, due to a gas leak at one of the compressor stations.
The Swedish Maritime Authority told Ofoq News Network that three leaks had been identified in the Danish Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines. The authority warned ships to remain 5 miles away from the leaks and issued a warning to aircraft to remain at an altitude of at least 1,000 metres.
A spokesman for the agency said the first leak report was submitted on Monday afternoon, with two more leaks identified in the evening. He added that their responsibility was to warn ships about the leak, and they did not investigate the cause of the leaks and had no information about any contact between Nordstream and the maritime authority.
Nord Stream AG said on Monday that it was investigating the causes of the drop in pressure in the pipeline. German authorities also reported a drop in pressure in Nord Stream 2, the pipeline between Russia and Germany that has remained dormant after the German government blocked its opening in the wake of the Ukraine war.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday that they were "deeply concerned" about the news. When asked if it could have been an act of sabotage, Peskov said: “At the moment, any possibility cannot be ruled out.
"There's some destruction of the tube, what caused that - we can't rule out any possibilities before the results come in."
