- French Prime Minister, Sebastien Le Cornu, said that curfew measures across France, including parts of Paris, contributed to maintaining calm last night and into Tuesday morning, adding that local authorities will decide later whether to impose an additional curfew in their regions on Tuesday evening. Locorno previously wrote on Twitter: “The specific curfew measures contributed to maintaining calm tonight.
I thank the police and gendarmes who implemented these measures, and I also thank the governors for their efforts and mobilization.” He explained that any new curfew on Tuesday evening “will be decided in the areas where the situation calls for it,” noting that local officials and mayors on the ground will be the ones who will make these decisions.
Several regions had implemented measures that they described as a "partial curfew", including Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Lille, Douai, Wattigniers and Dinan. Some of these measures continued until the early hours of Tuesday morning, while in other areas they included banning public gatherings until later Tuesday evening.
The curfew measures come after demonstrations took place in France over the past weekend, during which the protests escalated and turned into riots and looting, which included storming stores, burning buildings, and defacing landmarks in various areas of the country. The protests broke out a month ago due to the overcrowding of the French education system and its lack of resources, but they later expanded into a nationwide protest movement, against the backdrop of high costs of living and wealth disparity.
