The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, received a phone call from US President Donald Trump on Friday, during which they discussed diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing the escalation between Washington and Iran, amid anticipation of the next US step regarding Tehran after the Republicans lost the midterm elections. The Qatari Emir's court said that the Emir of Qatar and Trump discussed "the latest developments in the regional situation, especially the latest developments in diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing the escalation in the region."

The two sides discussed "the latest developments in international efforts, especially the efforts made by the State of Qatar to bring views closer between the parties concerned and support the negotiating path, paving the way for reaching a comprehensive agreement that ends the crisis and achieves security and stability in the region," according to the Amiri Diwan. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani stressed "the importance of continuing dialogue and adopting diplomatic means to settle differences, spare the region from further escalation, and ensure freedom of maritime navigation and security of energy supplies," according to the statement.

This call comes amid anticipation of the next steps that the Trump administration intends to take after the Republicans lost the majority of the Senate and House of Representatives in the US midterm elections. Qatar is leading mediation efforts between America and Iran in order to reach an agreement that would spare the region a large-scale military escalation.
