Dubai, United Arab Emirates - In 2017, the United Arab Emirates announced its ambition to colonize Mars within the next 100 years. Since then, the UAE has been taking confident steps towards the “Mars 2117” project, which is to build the first Emirati human settlement on the surface of Mars by 2117, through many projects, most notably the “Hope Probe,” which orbits the Red Planet to provide an integrated picture of the Martian atmosphere.
Now, a Dubai-based Indian digital artist is imagining what the first human settlement on the Red Planet might look like, in a series called EMARTIA. Digital artist Geo Mollor inspired the series from the ambitious “Mars 2117” project, during which he presented his vision of what the Emirati settlement on Mars would look like.
First, Mollor had to consider the enormous challenges of designing a habitable settlement on Mars. So in this series, Mullor imagines creating “an artificial ozone layer covering the top of the Emirati settlement,” he says.
Mollor explains that the design of “Emirates” comes with architecture that embodies Emirati culture, taking into account futuristic and environmentally friendly specifications. In order to make the series closer to reality, Mullor used real locations on Mars discovered by NASA, such as the Columbia Hills and Jezero Crater.
Like the UAE, the settlement “Emiratia” includes seven emirates connected to one headquarters, according to Mollor. Perhaps the most notable part of the series is imagining what the first hotel on Mars would look like, which bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Burj Al Arab in Dubai.
Mullor explains why he chose a design that mimics the Burj Al Arab, saying that the building is “an example of the wonderful architecture that is unique to Dubai in particular, and the Emirates in general.” Mollor shared with his followers many different visions of the first hotel on Mars, leaving the public free to choose the most beautiful design, noting that he is still receiving many responses from them until now.
According to Mullor's vision, the hotel will be one of the most futuristic hotels with advanced technical features. As for means of transportation on Mars, Mullor was inspired by the SpaceX missions, founded by Elon Musk, to envision options that would easily transport the residents of the “Emirates” settlement.
Spacecraft-like vehicles, flying taxis, and hyperloop trains appear, bearing the symbol of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority. Of course, the main landmarks of the UAE in the “Emirates” settlement, such as the Burj Khalifa and the Museum of the Future, stand out in their natural form due to their symbolism, in addition to other famous landmarks of the Emirates, such as the World Trade Center and the Emirates Towers.
Mullor pointed out that, through the series, he tried to bring mainly Arab architectural styles that reflect the Arab culture to the UAE. Since he began sharing it on his official Instagram account, this ongoing series has received widespread feedback from the platform’s pioneers, who expressed their admiration for the images that provide visual enjoyment and promising ideas for the “Mars 2117” project.
Mollor plans to launch the “Emirates” series in the “Metaverse” world, with the aim of enabling people to visit it in the virtual world.
