On Wednesday, Apple announced the MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR screen, which is its first laptop with a touch screen. Computer manufacturers have been releasing touch-screen devices for years, in attempts to update laptops with the times.
Apple was late in entering this field, but it is betting that its new device will attract the MacBook Pro's core audience of creative professionals and application developers. Today's announcement represents the latest addition to Apple's lineup of new products launched within the first two months of John Ternos' tenure as CEO of the company.
The touchscreen MacBook — along with other Apple innovations like the iPhone Duo and HomeView — will test whether Apple can still develop successful products that meet users' needs. The new MacBook Pro, equipped with a touch screen and scheduled to be launched on November 6, will come in two versions: One of them is 14 inches and the other is 16 inches, and it will work with Apple's "M5 Pro" or "M5 Max" chips.
The price of the smaller model starts at $2,899, while the price of the larger model starts at $3,399. Apple is promoting its new device as useful for tasks such as presentations, and it also allows developers to test how their applications work directly on their computers.
The company also highlighted the usefulness of this feature for graphic designers and musicians, noting the ability to draw preliminary diagrams or play virtual musical instruments by simply touching the screen. The company also confirmed that many current applications will work directly with the touch screen, as the software system will convert touches into clicks.
The new laptop will also include the “Dynamic Island” feature - which is the oval-shaped space at the top of iPhone screens that displays various information and includes the front camera. The "MacBook Pro" comes with a "PROLED
The company explains that the touch sensor is built into the screen itself instead of being placed as a layer on top of it. This is what the company states will reduce response time (delay) when scrolling or moving across the screen. Apple is notoriously late to adopting new technologies, often for good reasons.
It was not the first company to launch MP3 players, tablets, or smart watches, but it succeeded in making these products popular among consumers by making its devices simple and easy to use. The MacBook Pro touchscreen is the latest example of this approach.
The company launched the HomeView smart home control device earlier this month, in an attempt to challenge Amazon's dominance of the smart home market. Last week, Apple's first foldable iPhone went on sale, long after Samsung, its main competitor, had established its leading position in this market.
