Early Monday, federal officers executed a search warrant at the home of Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who has long been a target of the ire of US President Donald Trump's administration, according to a Justice Department spokesman and a source familiar with the matter. The Department of Justice said in a statement on Monday that investigators from Homeland Security Investigations (a unit of the Department of Homeland Security that handles criminal investigations) had “executed a judicially authorized search warrant obtained by the Department of Justice.”
“This executive action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” a Justice Department spokesperson said. The statement did not clarify the nature or details of the investigation.
Ofoq News Network contacted both the Ministry of Homeland Security and Representative Ilhan Omar to obtain a comment. Ilhan Omar is currently campaigning for re-election, and the search warrant was executed just a few weeks before the midterm elections.
While the authorities did not disclose the reason for the search, administration officials had previously indicated that it was under investigation. Tom Homan, who is responsible for the administration’s border file, told Fox News last month that “there are things going on” regarding Omar, before adding: “But I cannot reveal the details of what is happening.”
Speaking to the channel on Monday morning, Homan confirmed that the search warrant had been executed, but did not provide any other information. Ilhan Omar was born in Somalia and grew up in the midst of the civil war that ravaged the country. She then fled to the United States as a teenager, and later obtained American citizenship.
She was elected to Congress for the first time in 2018, and joined The Squad, a group of congresswomen of color known for their support of progressive causes. Since joining Congress, Omar has been subjected to vitriolic racist attacks, including from President Trump, who last year called her “trash” and said Somalis should “go back to where they came from.”
Her Minnesota constituency was also the target of a large-scale immigration enforcement crackdown earlier this year; This is the campaign that led to violent clashes between protesters and immigration authorities, and to the shooting death of two American citizens while protesting against the administration’s policies related to the influx of immigrants. Senior administration officials - including the Secretary of Homeland Security - accused Representative Omar of marrying her brother to help bring him to the United States, but they did not provide any evidence to substantiate this claim.
In a statement he made last month on Fox News regarding Omar, Homan said: “If someone commits an immigration violation, or engages in marriage fraud, or anything like that, no one is above the law, whether they are a member of Congress or not.” Asked specifically if that meant there was an open investigation into Omar, Homan responded: “I confirm that ICE is doing that...
Yes, as I said months ago, this is something that has been reported on and requires consideration.”
