The 26-year-old young Spaniard, Iker Cortajarena, knew the path to maturity early after he left his parent club, Real Sociedad, as a young man, making his stardom and name in Huesca all the way to Saudi immortality, in a journey that witnessed his interest in his academic career as well as obtaining a master’s degree.
Kortajarena is playing his second season with immortality in a very remarkable way, as he scored 4 goals in 7 regular matches and won the Best Player of the Match award 3 times in the past seven rounds, recording a distinguished start similar to his period with Huesca.
Basque Iker decided to take on a difficult challenge by leaving his parent team, Real Sociedad, in 2023, preferring to go through the professional experience after he realized that reaching the team was difficult.
Iker revealed in a lengthy interview with the newspaper “Noticias de Guipuzcoa” in 2023 that the administration offered him to continue in the reserve team, but was unable to guarantee him a place with the first team.
He explained: I had the opportunity to jump into professional football and I did not hesitate to make the decision. It's a new dream for me.
In addition to his football career, Kortajarena has a remarkable academic record, as he studied renewable energy engineering at Mondragon University, and also completed a master’s degree in education, which gives him qualifications to work in the field of teaching. He stated: I studied renewable energy engineering, and this year I finished my master’s degree in education, and I do not rule out studying sports journalism as well.
He explained that his passion for learning still continues, stressing that he is considering continuing his studies during his professional career, and among the options that attract him is working in sports journalism in the future, “I have always loved journalism. It would be wonderful to cover the Champions League final, travel, watch the matches and write about them.”
When asked by Al Arabiya.net about his master’s degree, Kortajarena replied, “Yes, I have a degree in engineering, thank you.”
After his departure from Sociedad to Huesca, Cortajarena made a name for himself, as the fans considered him an icon for the team in two and a half seasons after he contributed to the team’s rise from the third division to the second division and remained there until his transition to immortality.
Iker explained that his role model in football is his compatriot and former player for his parent team, Michael Merino, and said: He is my role model. With the difference in capabilities, I see that my playing style is similar to his in terms of physical strength and ability to reach the penalty area.
