- Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, said in a sharp interview with the Financial Times newspaper that Ukraine will resume its attacks on Russian oil refineries. Zelensky expressed his regret at what he described as the "dangerous withdrawal" of the United States with regard to sharing intelligence information and providing access to the Starlink satellite Internet service.
“The ban [on attacking refineries] has ended,” Zelensky told the newspaper in London. Zelensky’s comments are the latest indication publicly revealing his growing frustration with US President Donald Trump, further deepening already strained relations between the two leaders.
Last week, Trump announced a controversial deal to buy Russian diesel, and he also put intense pressure on Ukraine to stop targeting Russian refineries, in an effort to reduce energy costs ahead of the midterm elections. Ukraine reported on Wednesday that the Starlink service had imposed restrictions on some military internet services, disrupting vital operations, which sparked growing concern in Kiev and among European allies.
According to the Financial Times, Zelensky criticized Trump's willingness to conclude business deals with Moscow, as well as his apparent admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also noted that US military officials told their Ukrainian counterparts that “if you do not stop [attacks on the energy sector], we will cut off intelligence from you.”
Zelensky's warning about the resumption of attacks on Russian refineries came after another interview in which he expressed his anger at the fuel deal that Trump concluded with Moscow. In response to a question from British journalist Piers Morgan whether he felt he had been “betrayed” by the Trump administration, Zelensky answered “yes,” describing the agreement as a “simple victory” for the Kremlin.
