Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed on Friday that any country in the world may become a victim of Western geopolitical expansion and color revolutions orchestrated by the West, including Central Asian countries.
“Any country in the world, without exception, may fall victim to Western geopolitical expansion and color revolutions orchestrated by the West, including our partners in Central Asia,” Lavrov said during a speech he delivered at a conference of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on security issues in Central Asia and Afghanistan.
He added, "Attempts of this kind were made against a number of our neighboring countries, but we were able to thwart them."
Last May (June), the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Sergei Lebedev, announced that the League was facing attempts by external parties to dismantle it through color revolutions, pointing to Georgia’s withdrawal and the position of Moldova and Ukraine, stressing that Belarus was able to thwart a similar attempt in 2020.
In a related matter, the Russian Foreign Minister confirmed that NATO is trying to impose its will on Eurasia, which is far beyond its scope of responsibility. Lavrov said: “NATO has no relationship with Eurasia, and is now trying to claim that the entire territory of Eurasia is within its area of responsibility, and because it considers itself a defensive alliance, it protects the territory of member states, and claims that the threats to the territory of NATO countries now come from (the area of) the Taiwan Strait, the South China Sea, and so on.”
The Foreign Minister added: “This represents a dangerous philosophical shift that shows NATO’s intentions to dictate its will far beyond its area of responsibility.”
Lavrov added: "We need some kind of constructive response, which can only be provided by the countries of the region themselves." Such a response is exemplified by the idea of the Greater Eurasian Partnership put forward by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that “it is necessary to use the process of formation of the Eurasian Partnership as a material basis for cooperation between states and complementary structures located in Eurasia, and then build a framework for collective security based on this basis. The initiative of our President is directed to all states and regional and subregional organizations located on the Eurasian continent without exception ...”.
