French President Emmanuel Macron oversaw a "first launch" trial of an intercontinental missile from a submarine off the west coast of the country this morning, Tuesday, as announced by the Élysée Palace and the Ministry of Defense.
The presidency told the French news agency that Macron monitored the launch from aboard a frigate of the national navy.
The Ministry of Defense clarified in a statement that the missile, which is the third version of the strategic ballistic missile "M51" sea-land that entered service a year ago, was "devoid of its nuclear payload" and fell "in the northern Atlantic Ocean hundreds of kilometers from any shore."
