Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian once again acknowledged the existence of "some aspects of popular dissatisfaction" in his country, in light of the stifling economic crisis and the continuing repercussions of the war, but he praised Iranian citizens for their support for Tehran during the past months.
Pezeshkian said during the Shura Council session devoted to voting on granting confidence to the new Minister of Defense, Mehrdad Akhlaqi, on Sunday, that “if national cohesion and popular solidarity continue, no force will be able to subjugate Iran,” following successive statements by US President Donald Trump in which he hinted at the possibility of resuming attacks on Iran.
He also added, "Missiles are not the only means of defending the country. The people represent the most important tools of defense, and national unity and cohesion constitute another defensive factor," as he put it.
In addition, Pezeshkian responded to the United States' threats about the possibility of returning to fighting, saying that Tehran "will confront any attack with strength and courage until the last breath, and will not allow its enemies to covet its lands." He pointed out that the government and the armed forces are focusing their efforts on strengthening and developing Iran's defense capabilities.
While he praised the new Minister of Defense, Mehrdad Akhlaqi Katabji, whose appointment was approved by Parliament on Sunday, after months of managing the ministry temporarily. He said, "The scientific competence, knowledge and specialization that Akhlaqi possesses in the field of defense structure is not hidden from anyone."
Pezeshkian's statements came in light of continued tension between Tehran and Washington, amid American threats about the possibility of resuming attacks on Iran, after reports indicated that the US Department of Defense issued directives to Central Command to complete preparations for the possible resumption of military operations, while examining options that include targeting nuclear facilities, infrastructure, and energy sites.
The United States, in coordination with Israel, began attacks on Iran on February 28, targeting military sites and nuclear facilities, before the fighting stopped under understandings in June. Since then, the two sides have exchanged threats to resume the confrontation, while reports indicate that Washington is considering new military options, in conjunction with Iran strengthening its defenses and conducting tests on missile systems, drones, and air defense.
Note that Iran is at the same time facing escalating economic pressures due to US sanctions and restrictions imposed on its oil exports, in conjunction with the faltering diplomatic efforts to end the confrontation and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
