The End of Pants Dominance.. Will the Skirt Regain Its Place in Women's Wardrobes?

- The skirt holds the same status for the Italian fashion house "Prada" as the trench coat does for the British brand "Burberry" and the Bar jacket does for the French fashion house "Dior". It is considered one of the most prominent features that have shaped the identity of the fashion house and has been a fundamental element in its collections since Miuccia Prada took over her family business in the late 1970s.
The Italian designer has not abandoned her connection to the skirt, and she rarely appears without an A-line skirt in her look. During an interview with American journalist Charlie Rose in 2006, which was widely circulated online after the house opened Fashion Week in Milan, she considered the skirt to be like a t-shirt, the starting point for building an outfit, starting from the shirt and jacket to the rest of the elements.
She added: "I care much more about skirts than pants. I always say that a woman wearing pants is more concerned about making her bag look beautiful, while the skirt gives you much more space to coordinate, experiment, and add your creative touch."
Thus, the Italian house "Prada" presented what it does best in the Spring/Summer 2027 show, which had a straightforward title: "The Skirt". The skirt made its presence felt in all 63 looks, as dresses, trousers, and shorts were absent from the collection, in an approach that Miuccia and her creative partner, Belgian designer Raf Simons, described in the show notes as "an exercise in exploration within strict boundaries."
The skirts came in pleated cuts and calm colors of gray and black, interspersed with fluorescent touches, along with layers, ruffles, bows, and printed sketches. There were also designs dyed to mimic the paintings of Mark Rothko, and others fully embroidered with crystals, while fine stones were attached to industrial Velcro straps in several looks.
Raf Simons stated that they were preoccupied with the way the Italian house's skirts maintain their presence over time, noting that their "strangeness, shape, and decorations" reflect stable elements in the language of the fashion house's designs. The skirt is regaining its presence after an absence; this focus on the skirt comes at a time when the piece is starting to regain its presence after years during which tailored trousers with precise cuts and sporty suits dominated fashion trends.
Global skirt market forecasts indicate a growth of nearly 6.5% annually until 2033, amid a shift in the sector away from neutral colors associated with the "quiet luxury" trend, towards more diverse and playful options. In February, Dario Vitale presented a pencil skirt with prints inspired by the works of American artist Andy Warhol in his exclusive collection for the Italian house "Versace," before leaving the fashion house after the "Prada" group acquired it.
In contrast, the podcast "An Excellent Fit" announced in one of its episodes the "death" of the skirt, while American editor Jo Ellison revealed in the "Financial Times" that she had excluded it from her wardrobe due to the difficulty of coordinating it, as the difference in length and suitable types of shoes requires a great deal of thought, according to her expression. However, Miuccia saw that these complications are precisely what gives the skirt its creative value, noting that this single piece combines different ideas, and anyone who wears the skirt can reinterpret it in their own way by coordinating it with other pieces, which changes its connotation, adding that it is a contemporary piece thanks to its flexibility and adaptability, opening the door to contradiction.
For Prada and Simons, dedicating the entire collection to the skirt was not a way to limit options, but rather an experiment to explore its multiple potentials and transform it into a piece that can be reinterpreted according to the style of each wearer and how it is coordinated.
