US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullen on Sunday played down fears that broadcasting a video of the execution of Fort Hood attacker Nidal Hassan would fuel extremism, defending a plan that raised objections from other Republican politicians.

“I don't see at this point any increased risk at all because of this,” Mullen said during an interview with CBS in response to a question about the possibility that broadcasting Hassan's execution by firing squad would turn him into a "symbol" that would inspire extremists. He added: "I think people need to understand that if you attack America, we will go after you, and we will make sure that the punishment fits the crime."

The US Department of Defense announced, on Monday, that President Donald Trump agreed to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recommendation that Hassan be executed by firing squad by a US Army squad. “The day of reckoning has finally come for Hassan,” Ministry of Defense spokesman Sean Parnell wrote on the “X” platform, noting that 13 people were killed and 32 others were injured in the attack he launched in 2009.

It is noteworthy that Nidal Hassan was the perpetrator of an attack that occurred at the Fort Hood military base in Texas in 2009, killing 13 people and wounding 32 others.
