The "tragic accident" near the border with Egypt... The Prime Minister of Sudan comments

Sudan's Prime Minister, Kamel Idris, affirmed the Sudanese government's commitment to supporting efforts to uncover the circumstances of the "tragic incident" on the border with Egypt, and indicated continued coordination with Cairo within the framework of "fraternal relations" between the two countries. Idris previously wrote on his page on the “X” platform, Twitter: “We extend our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the families of Sudanese citizens who lost their lives in the tragic accident that occurred near the Sudanese-Egyptian border.

We ask God Almighty to grant the deceased His mercy, and to inspire their families with patience and solace.” The Prime Minister of Sudan continued by saying: “Following the Sovereignty Council’s decision to form a fact-finding committee, we affirm the government’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at identifying all the circumstances of this tragedy and revealing the facts related to it.”

Idris concluded by saying: “The safety, dignity and protection of Sudanese citizens remains a firm national priority. We stress the importance of continuing coordination with the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt, within the framework of the historical and established fraternal relations that bring together the two brotherly countries and peoples.”

On Monday, the Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan announced the formation of a fact-finding committee to investigate what it described as a “painful accident” to which a number of Sudanese miners were exposed in the border region between Sudan and Egypt, according to an official statement. The President of the Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, issued a decision “to form a fact-finding committee that includes representatives of the Public Prosecution and the relevant judicial and security authorities, to investigate the circumstances of the incident, determine all the circumstances and facts related to it, and submit a report on the results of the investigation.”

Pictures and videos have spread on social media in recent hours of what were said to be victims of miners as a result of air strikes in the border areas between Egypt and Sudan. Egypt did not issue a statement about the incident, but the Egyptian Armed Forces had announced in previous statements that they were confronting “illegal” gold mining within Egyptian territory, and were continuing to pursue those involved in it.
