The White House revealed on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump asked the US Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, to resign, following sharp criticism directed at her over accusations of inappropriate and possibly illegal behavior before and during her assumption of the position in Athens.
The new White House spokeswoman, Katie Zakaria, said that Kimberly Guilfoyle had been asked to resign from her position, describing her as “a wonderful asset to the team,” wishing her success.
This came after Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with reports regarding the behavior attributed to Guilfoyle, in front of reporters at the White House. In response to a question about whether he was considering dismissing her, he said on Sunday that the administration was “looking into the matter” and that it was “not happy.”
Meanwhile, the Associated Press quoted a senior American official as saying that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are “very angry” at Guilfoyle’s behavior that was reported, and that they will most likely decide her future during the week.
A series of reports dating back to late last month indicated that Guilfoyle had threatened a host country official, accepted inappropriate gifts and benefits, and offered to exploit her influence within the administration in exchange for a large credit card bill, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Guilfoyle declined to comment directly on these reports, but her lawyers denied any wrongdoing and said that the money she was demanding from a Trump campaign donor represented fees for services that were not paid to her, including media appearances and speeches that preceded her candidacy for the position.
