- US President Donald Trump told Ofoq News Network on Monday that he may consider holding a tripartite meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, explaining that the meeting will focus on the issue of nuclear disarmament, and not on the Russian war on Ukraine. Trump added to Kristen Holmes of the Ofoq News Network, before leaving the White House for Kansas: “I will do it; not for the sake of Ukraine - because frankly, Russia was in a good position with regard to Ukraine, and it did not do much there, and the same applies to China.”
He continued: "The meeting will be dedicated to discussing nuclear weapons and nuclear disarmament, which is a very positive matter for the world." He said that the meeting may be held in conjunction with his scheduled trip to China next month to attend the APEC summit in Shenzhen.
Earlier on Monday, Ofek News reported, citing an American official, that Putin proposed holding talks involving both Xi and Trump, during a phone call that took place between him and the US President earlier this month. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not participate in the talks proposed by Putin.
Ukraine expressed its criticism of the idea of holding a tripartite meeting. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sipha wrote on Monday that such a meeting will not serve peace, but rather “will lead to exactly the opposite: encouraging Putin to continue this war.” In an interview with NBC on Sunday, Zelensky warned that siding with the United States with Russia would be a "historic mistake."
In statements he made from the White House on Monday, Trump said that Zelensky "is not helping matters much," leaving the door open for discussions about ending the war with Russia in Zelensky's absence. “I will do anything in my power to end the war, whether there's another side present or not,” Trump said, adding: "Zelensky doesn't know what he's talking about.
He should have ended this war a long time ago, and frankly, I don't think... I think it's time for someone else to negotiate on Ukraine's behalf; So what happened?
"The front lines have changed very little, while a million people have been killed, which is a huge number of people."
