Citizens in Egypt are anticipating the end of daylight saving time and the return to winter time, as the end of October approaches, as the clock is scheduled to be delayed by 60 minutes by the end of Thursday, October 29.
Winter time begins to apply as of Friday, October 30, when the clock will be delayed at midnight on Thursday by 60 minutes, returning from 12 midnight to 11 p.m.
The time change comes in implementation of Law No. 24 of 2023 regarding the report on the daylight saving time system, which stipulates that the legal hour be advanced by 60 minutes from the last Friday of April until the end of the last Thursday of October of each calendar year.
Most smartphones can adjust automatically when automatic time and time zone settings are enabled, while some watches and devices require manual time adjustment when winter time begins.
The daylight saving time system is based on moving the official clock forward by 60 minutes during part of the year, with the aim of making greater use of daylight hours, while the return to winter time occurs by delaying the clock by 60 minutes at the end of the period specified for applying daylight saving time.
Egypt returned to implementing the daylight saving time system in April 2023, after a hiatus that lasted for several years, in accordance with Law No. 24 of 2023, which stipulated that the legal clock be advanced by 60 minutes, starting from the last Friday of April until the end of the last Thursday of October of each calendar year.
The system aims to rationalize energy consumption and take advantage of the extended daylight hours during the spring and summer seasons, by adjusting the official time to suit the nature of the natural lighting hours, according to what the government explained during the discussion of the draft law before the House of Representatives.
By law, the clock is changed twice a year; The first is to advance it by 60 minutes at the end of April to start daylight saving time, and the second is to delay it by 60 minutes at the end of October to return to winter time, without the need to issue a new decision every time, as long as the current law continues to be in effect.
Friday is the date for changing the timing to reduce the possibility of confusion in the working hours of government departments and institutions, as it is a weekly day off in large sectors of the country.
