The Egyptian authorities revealed the details of the fire incident at the Church of the Virgin Mary in the Burk Al-Khiyam area in Giza Governorate, after a person stormed the place and set fire to the curtains, before the fire was controlled and he was arrested.
The Ministry of Interior said in a statement yesterday, Thursday, that camera recordings showed that the accused entered the church carrying a plastic water bottle containing a white substance without being stopped by the administrative security responsible for the gate.
It also revealed that the intruder was found sitting on one of the chairs inside, stripped to the upper part of his clothes, and raving incomprehensible words, and he was controlled and arrested.
She explained that the examination of the detainee revealed that he was suffering from psychological disorders as a result of his addiction to the drug ice, and his previous placement in a psychiatric hospital.
In addition, she pointed to the damage to the church, which was evident in the fire partially igniting a number of curtains and a floor carpet in a hall on the first floor of the church.
The Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Central Giza said in a statement that at exactly six o'clock on Thursday morning, an unknown person entered the Church of the Virgin Mary in the Burk Al-Khiyam area of the Diocese of Central Giza, under the pretext of prayer. Then she indicated that he sneaked into the church located on the ground floor, and set fire to the church’s curtains and carpets using a bottle containing a flammable liquid, which he had hidden inside a bag, and he also destroyed the wooden sickles.
The Diocese also confirmed that the fire was under control without any casualties.
