- Travelers coming from Italy to Australia were unable to arrive on time in Perth last week, after their flight was canceled due to the detection of bedbugs. The "9News" network, which cooperates with Ufoq News, reported that the Australian national airline "Qantas" was forced to cancel the flight that was scheduled, on Saturday, (October 10), after receiving complaints from passengers on a previous flight who reported that they were exposed to bites while on board the plane.
The Australian media outlet reported that the complaints came from passengers who were in economy class on flight QF5 from Perth to Rome the previous day, i.e. October 9. One of the passengers, Hayley Bagnall, told 9News: “They were crawling on our belongings, our clothes, the Qantas sheets, and they were even crawling on the window.”
Qantas told Ufoq News on Tuesday that it is still investigating the incident, explaining in a statement: “We offer our sincere apologies to customers for canceling Saturday’s flight from Rome to Perth. This procedure allowed our engineers and maintenance teams to thoroughly clean the plane, after detecting a problem in a limited number of economy class seats.” The company confirmed that aircraft cabins undergo cleaning operations according to high standards on a regular basis.
It also stated that it provided accommodation for travelers who were scheduled to travel on Saturday, and booked alternative flights for them. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects that feed on a person's blood and usually bite him while he sleeps.
These insects are distributed throughout the world and in diverse environments. Bedbug bites are similar to mosquito bites, as they may appear as swelling and cause itching, and symptoms may worsen if the person suffers from an allergy to these insects.
Contrary to what their name might suggest, bedbugs aren't limited to beds. The Centers for Disease Control notes that "bedbugs spread by infiltrating the creases and creases of purses, suitcases, folded clothing, bedding, furniture, and anywhere else they can hide. People often don't realize they are transporting these insects and causing them to spread elsewhere as they move."
Bedbug bites usually do not require treatment beyond the use of topical preparations. However, the Centers for Disease Control emphasized the need to treat places where these insects are spread through pest control services.
